We need more women in Parl: Hon Freda
MEMBER of Parliament for Temotu Vatud Constituency and Minister for Women, Youth, and Children’s Affairs says more women are needed in Parliament.
Speaking during the Women in Politics Forum last week, Hon. Freda Tuki Soriocomua said the political representation of women in parliament is very unfair and that more jobs should be done to put more women in parliament.
She encourages intending women candidates to prepare now as the election is coming closer.
“Think of who you are and what you can do for our people. Prove yourselve to the country that you are a capable leader.
“Seek advice and direction from winning women candidates in preparation for their campaigns.
“It’s no secret that women are vastly underrepresented at all levels of government, all across the world but we must make change in Solomon Islands,” Hon Freda said.
She also adviced women to avoid jealousy but work together for a common purpose and that is to bring better change for the country.
Hon Freda said the mindset of jealousy must be changed as it has nothing good for women but will continue to deprive women from their capabilities as leaders.
She said a best strategy is to work with men to kill-off the culture and traditional concept of the country.
“As a woman candidate I faced provocation and abuse during my campaign but I must tell you these are part of the game,” Hon Freda said.
She said the election is near and that women must work extra hard to secure a place in parliament.
Meanwhile, Hon Freda said women are good leaders with exceptional instinct in decision making.
She adds that women are generally lees corrupt compared to men leaders.
Hon Freda said female politicians can be more responsible and concentrate on issues that matters more to the future of the country, adding women would be more likely to focus on these issues than men.
She told women attending the forum that being a leader is a life time opportunity for women to contribute to the development of Solomon Islands.
On the same note, Hon Freda warned women not to enter parliament for the purpose of serving themselves but to serve the whole country, men, women and children.
