FIVE communities in west Honiara constituency will receive SBD$500,000 worth of community projects from its Member of Parliament.

A formal ceremony was held yesterday to officially launch the five communities’ constitution in west Honiara; namely Wind Valley, Namoruka, Tasahe B, Tolu Ridge and Forest Valley community.

During the launching, the Community Development Officer, (CDO) Mr Brain Taupiri made an official announcement that these communities will receive SBD$100,000 each for feeder road upgrading.

With that, Mr Taupiri said launching of constitution will go towards preparation for MID projects funded under its grants which they have received last year as part of the transportation grant from the government.

However, with regards to the project fund by MP for West Honiara, each of the five communities will receive SBD$100,000 and will be paid directly to their community accounts.

And it will be for community feeder road upgrading.

This is a new approach the MP has introduced to his constituency with a purpose to involve communities in projects and man their own projects.

“The project is a new approach actually it’s a first of its kind to any constituency to direct engage community to part of such project,” Mr Taupiri said.

CDO Taupiri said MP Namson Tran is excited too for people’s involvement and to take ownership of the projects, saying other bigger projects of MID in terms of infrastructure belongs to government but other small ones within communities and feeder roads is what the MP looks at.

“Thinking it’s a best option to give back funds to communities for community itself to take responsibility and implement the projects,” CDO Taupiri said.

Mr Wilson Mamae, Deputy Chairman for Namoruka Community, as a recipient of the project highlights this project will support the community in some forms of business.

Mr Mamae said having a constitution in place will support communities venture into business opportunity because people engage in project which then also create employments for them.

Not only will community receive funds from MP but other organisations as well because of road accessibility and community are organised by having constitution in place,” Mr Mamae said.

A woman representative also highlights take ownership project which is feeder road upgrading will change people’s mind in rubbish control because they are ones look after the roads.

This is a pilot project which started with five communities, and there will be fifteen more communities will receive projects this year then followed.
