Bad weather halts flights

INTERNATIONAL and domestic flights to and from Honiara were cancelled yesterday.

Domestic flights are said to resume today.

Solomon Airlines Travel Centre said this is due to the wet weather experienced in the country over the past few days.

Virgin Australia flight which should have arrived at 2pm yesterday has been rescheduled for 2pm tomorrow Thursday.

Air New Guinea which was supposed to have arrived yesterday afternoon was also cancelled for 1.05pm today.

The national flag carrier’s Boeing 737 has also cancelled its flight for 4pm today.

The domestic fleet was grounded yesterday and are said to resume their flights today.

The National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) in their situation report yesterday said the heavy rain is associated with a tropical low depression.

It says Honiara totalled 89 mm and Henderson recorded 65mm within 3 hours rainfall according to rainfall recorded since 11pm to 2am Monday.

“This was quite a lot of rain over a period of 3 hours,” it says.

“Current weather information indicates that a trough lies over southern parts of Solomon Islands and links to a Tropical Low located southwest of Rennell & Bellona Province.”
