World Ocean Day and Coral Triangle Day to be celebrated
THE country will mark the World Ocean Day and the Coral Triangle Day this week.
The World Ocean Day will be on June 8 whilst the Coral Triangle Day falls on June 9.
According to MECDM, this yearly tradition is set aside by the six Coral Triangle countries to celebrate the Coral Triangle as a globally significant eco-region and to highlight its relevance to the region and the world.
The aim is to gauge support to help conserve and protect this natural treasure and the theme for this year is “Curbing Marine Debris, Reduce your plastic waste”.
However, to mark these events, a series of events is proposed to be conducted in Honiara involving different stakeholders and partners.
To conduct these events, ECD aims to join the global community in celebrating them.
This opportunity will also raise public awareness and promote sustainable solutions for many of the environmental issues facing the country today.
To engage with and encourage stakeholders including youths, faith-based organisations, children, schools, communities, private companies in practical actions in addressing issues of waste management, conservation and protection of Solomon Islands ecosystems.
To promote and highlight Government, NGO and communities’ efforts in managing SI natural resources.
On the same note, this year’s World Ocean Day’s theme is “Our Oceans, Our Future”.
And the main conservation focus will be on plastic pollution prevention and cleaning the ocean of marine litter.
It is the source for food, income and many of coastal communities’ livelihoods.
It is imperative that we take responsibility to care for the oceans as it cares of us.
The event will feature awareness on wildlife, videos, arts and craft, awareness talks & promotions, quizzes entertainment and media outreach and promotions.
