Amnesty soon in Auki
TWO weeks of amnesty is to be conducted in Auki soon for persons still in possession of illegal firearms.
The programme will commence after the deployment of the time period, ending on June 9.
Provincial Police Commander (PPC) for Malaita province, David Wate, said the time period is free to anyone still in possession of any firing weapon, to return it without any arrest and or charges made.
He said, this will be much safer for anyone within this time period until June 9.
Wate warns that after June 9, any individual found in possession of a firearm will be arrested and prosecuted.
“My police officers are ready to help out during the amnesty period guns will be handed over at the Auki police station during this time frame.
He calls on all Malaitans to work together with police to keep and maintain law and order in the province and in the country.
“I believe that if we work together as real malaitans; malaita province will be a safe place to live especially for our women, and children.
“So far no handing over of any firing arm is made and I believe we will expect people to surrender their arms if we want lasting peace in our nation,” Wate said.
