3 sexual assaults in 3 weeks

A man from Choiseul province has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a seven year-old girl in the province

Police Commissioner reports that this is one of three such cases over the past three weeks.

Matthew Varley said the first arrest was a man (29) arrested for sexual assault on a girl on June 3 in Renbel province.

“In Central Makira Constituency, a 30-year-old man was arrested on the 6th of June for another sexual assault.

“And very recently another man was arrested in Choiseul province for committing the same crime,” he said.

Commissioner Varley said the men had been arrested by the respective provincial police officers and are now before the court.

He said details of the three cases will not be revealed at this moment as investigations are still underway.

However, Mr Varley reminds people that sexual assault is a very serious offense under the country’s penal court which can carries a maximum of 15 years life-imprisonment.

“The message I want to get across is violence against women and girls or sexual assault against women and girls is not acceptable in today’s society as it against the law.

“And I want to encourage anyone who may have victim of sexual or domestic violence to come forward to police and report the issue.

“We will take action and charge people found to have committed the offense and we will put them before the court.

“So my message to the communities across the country is enough is enough and stop violence against women and girls,” he said.
