Six airstrips to undergo major upgrade

SIX provincial airstrips across the country will soon undergo a major upgrade, assured the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communication and Aviation, Moses Virivolomo.
The six airports are Taro airstrip in Choiseul province, Seghe in Western Province, Suavanao in Isabel, Lata in Temotu, Tingoa airstrip in Renbell and Marau in east Guadalcanal.
Mr Virivolomo said the reason why they choose these airstrips is because they are owned by the government.
He said the upgrade will be funded by the Solomon Islands and New Zealand Government.
“Three will be funded by the Solomon Islands government, and three by New Zealand Government.”
He said the construction will kick off this year.
“Currently we doing preparatory works, prepare accountability documents and company structure.”
Mr Virivolomo said the upgrade of the six airports will see them tar sealed, installed with new lighting system, fencing and improved terminals.
