OBM driver arrested for collision

A man has been arrested yesterday in relation to the sea accident on December 21 this year, which had resulted in the loss of a young boy’s life.

Deputy Commissioner Gabriel Manelusi said the boat driver has been arrested and remanded in police custody waiting to be charged.

This is in relation to an incident which occurred at Lavuro point, west Guadalcanal.

He said with community support and cooperation the accused was arrested and is set to face justice.

Mr Manelusi commended public cooperation on this matter, reiterating that police jobs can only be effective when there is community support.

Following the collision, a young boy lost his life and police are calling on all drivers to be careful while travelling.

Reports said that the Outboard motor in which the deceased was travelling was heading to Ghorabau at South Guadalcanal while the other boat was heading to Honiara from Marasa, which is also at South Guadalcanal (Weathercoast).

According to Solomon Business Magazine’s (SBM) social website Mr John Stewart, the owner of the OBM in which the deceased was travelling, confirmed that it was his nephew who was the deceased and he was 12 years of age.

He said his driver was trying to avoid the other OBM three times but it was difficult as their OBM was slow whilst the other was faster.

“As a result of the collision my nephew was killed,” said Stewart.

According to Mr Stewart, his OBM was carrying five children and five adults and none of them was under the influence of alcohol but he alleged that the driver of the other OBM that smashed his OBM was drunk.
