Crocodile has commercial value: Sandakabatu

BLC Chairman Hon. Connely Sandakabatu.
THE population of crocodile in the country is wild and becoming dangerous but Chairman of the Bills and Legislation committee, Hon Connelly Sandakabatu, says there is way of controlling them.
Mr Sandakabatu said one way of controlling the number of crocodiles is to put them in farms and make money out of them.
“We must not afraid to assist our people to look for new opportunities. For instance crocodile farming is an opportunity that we should look into
“Not only that but we all know that the population of crocodile in the wild is growing fast and becoming dangerous here in our country,” Mr Sandakabatu said.
He said there are other countries such as Australia and Thailand which are doing well in farming and selling crocodile meat and products right to lucrative markets in Asia and around the world.
“We need to seriously take advantage of our resources and make them useful for us and the country,” he said.
“The country needs to improve production in these sectors. The country cannot improve if we continue to spend only a microscopic portion of the budget allocation on these sectors.”
“The opportunity is definitely there and our rural people who made up the bulk of our country have been waiting and waiting and doing very little in terms of worthwhile economic activities.”
He also highlighted that the government must have the attitude to assist the locals that are successful in marketing and exporting local agricultural products, like cassava and kava to international markets.
“This is our people, the very people we must not forget to support then and support them big.
“I am convinced that supporting our local business will only be the right thing to do,” Mr Sandakabatu said.
“Again the important thing to note is that these are the industries if properly supported will create the opportunities for the involvement of the bulk of our populations,” Sandakabatu highlighted.
