Constitutional Congress meet with experts on federalism

MEMBERS of Constitutional Congress and Eminent Persons Advisory Council (EPAC) are currently meeting with external experts on federalism, constitution-making, governance and professional constitution drafting for a pre-plenary session on the proposed federal constitution from April 3 – 7, 2017.
The team of experts are Professor Yash Ghai (constitution-making), Professor Nico Steytler (multilevel governance and federalism), and Dr Philip Knight (constitution drafting).
The experts have arrived in the country early April, and they made a courtesy call to the Prime Minister on Monday April 3, 2017, before they meet Congress and EPAC members for the pre-plenary session this week.
The pre-plenary session with the experts and members of Congress and EPAC at Mendana hotel conference room, is to discuss the finalized positions of consultations on the 2nd 2014 Draft Federal Constitution of Solomon Islands that was put together by Congress in a prior pre-plenary session from Monday February 20, to Friday March 31, 2017.
Those positions were made by the provinces and stakeholders on the 2nd 2014 Draft Federal Constitution during the 2015 and 2016 Public Awareness consultations.
The Constitutional Reform Unit is arranging logistics for this pre-plenary and joint plenary sessions.
The joint plenary proper will start on Monday April 10 to discuss substantive matters within the current draft and start the drafting process.
Constitutional Reform Unit (CRU) is a division established within the Prime Minister’s Office to oversee the completion of the Solomon Islands’ Constitutional Reform programme.
