Ms Sigimanu, PS for MWYC

A nationwide study by women’s Ministry indicates Solomon Islands still remains highest for Child Abuse.

This is according to a nationwide research by a study team from the Ministry of women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs basically on gender-based violence and child abuse.

Reflecting the findings carried in 2008, Permanent Secretary for MWYCFA, Mrs Ethel Sigimanu highlighted a base-line study on child’s protection situation unveiled many children have experienced abuse daily.

More specifically Mrs Sigimanu spotlighted that the form of abuse comprises of sexual abuse, physical and neglect which often falls in the hands of those providing love and care either parents or family members.

With rising child abuse in the country, Mrs Sigimanu said Solomon Islands is no longer safe for children, and the country has lesser power to withstand the test of influence, cruelty and greed.

“Since children’s issues and concerns are cross-cutting, I call on the National Advisory and Action Committee on Children to work on moving the Child and Family welfare policy forward,” PS Sigimanu said.

Although CRC and National Children’s Policy are in place, PS Sigimanu urged everyone to delve into specific areas on how best to deal with children’s welfare, and must be a key agenda in the country.

Children access to use alcohol, kava, betal-nut and tobacco and alcohol beverage is relatively high in Isabel (14 percent), Honiara (12 percent), Guadalcanal (10 percent) and Temotu (9 percent).

With regards to Tobacco, the survey finds 22 percent of the population, including 10-years and above, use the carcinogenic product, with male also dominating at 43 percent.

“Meanwhile the commencement of the Family Protection Act (FPA) and the passage of the penal code sexual offences amendment bill reflect Government’s commitment towards eliminating violence against children,” PS Sigimanu said.
