THERE have been several attempts to salvage MV Nuatabu which reportedly ran aground on a reef at Suri in Northeast Choiseul, Tuesday night.

Lauru Shipping owned MV Nuatabu departed Honiara on Sunday night, taking a round trip to Choiseul Province via Wagina on a northeast route early this week when it met its fate.

Reports reaching the paper said there was no beacon on the reef which resulted in the incident.

It says as on Wednesday, a tugboat from a nearby logging company attempted to get the ship off the reef but to no avail.

Lauru Shipping when called yesterday confirmed the incident and said a tugboat has been tasked to try and pull free the ship from the reef during yesterday’s afternoon tide.

It says the shipping company’s manager who is on holiday, was also onboard and has been putting efforts to try and pull off the ship from the reef.

It says all the passengers have been offloaded with most of them then travelling by boat to their destinations.

Island Sun witnessed when the vessel berthed few minutes at Gizo on Monday, fully loaded with passengers before continuing the journey to Choiseul Province.

It is anticipated that the ship might be rescued as of yesterday or else in the coming days.
