SMM Sumitomo handed 55 green wheelie bins to the Honiara City Council in an occasion held at the Central Market yesterday.

The wheelie bins is the second part of Sumitomo’s donation along with a shredding machine currently located at the Ranadi dumpsite under its Compost project with HCC.

During the official handing over yesterday, the SMM Sumitomo representative, Mr Nicholas Biliki, in his remarks, said the bins are intended only for green waste collection.

He said the green waste will be transported twice a day to the shredding machine at Ranadi landfill for producing compost.

“SMM Solomon Ltd hopes these bins will assist HCC compost workers to produce this compost without much difficulty.

“May I appeal to HCC to take good care of these bins, and of the Compost Project as well so that together we shall keep this beautiful city clean,” Mr Biliki said.

The Honiara City Clerk, Mr Charles Kelly yesterday on behalf of HCC’s Administration and market venders accepted the wheelie bins, saying it is beneficial to Honiara Central Market usage.

“To buy these 55 wheelie bins, Council did not have money, and council has 12 divisions providing different services, for such donation I accepted on half of HCC and market venders,” Mr Kelly said.

Mr Kelly said Sumitomo’s assistance is timely and will help everyone not only green waste management but also with the compost that local farmers will benefit from.

Mr Kelly said the bins are public property and it is crucial public and venders take ownership of them.

Mr Kelly also warned public that the bins are not to be burnt, kicked or thrown into the sea, but must be used in the right way.

“I want to appeal to venders please look after these properties so as the council takes ownership of it to assure Sumitomo that we can look after it,” Mr Kelly said.

The event was attended by HCC’s responsible division’s staffs, Honiara Central Market Venders Association and the general public.
