Second suspect arrested
POLICE have arrested the second suspect in relation to the LGZ Easter double murder yesterday morning, just six days after the first suspect was nabbed Monday last week.
The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) in a statement issued yesterday said: “A Police operation was conducted in the early hours today [yesterday] and successfully apprehended the second suspect at his home at Fourere in North Malaita.”
The Police Commissioner acknowledged the assistance rendered by community leaders, chiefs, youths and church leaders for their tremendous support to Police for the second arrest of the alleged suspect.
“I thank them for their support and understanding,” Commissioner of Police Mr Matthew Varley said in the statement.
It says the suspect is currently in police custody and will be transferred to Honiara in due course, as investigations are continuing.
“As this matter is ongoing, no further comment can be made at this time,” the statement reads.
However, an insider early last week told the local media that police identified the second suspect as Raymond Keofa who is from Lau/Mbaelelea, north Malaita.
But the long arm of the law does not stop here.
Police Commissioner Matthew Varley has told the media that as police have identified two suspects from the CCTV footage, that doesn’t mean their investigation stops there.
“As part of the investigation into this case, we will look both before and after the event to see if there is others involved but these are our two prime suspects,” he said.
The first suspect, Jimson Goufi, who hails from Baegu, also in the northern tip of Malaita, has appeared in court Tuesday last week on the charge of murder.
Police have confirmed that he was working as a security guard at LGZ building in Town Ground during the time of the alleged murder.
Police have yet to confirmed as to what charge(s) laid against the second alleged murder suspect apprehended yesterday.
