No firearms yet collected
FOUR days into the weapons amnesty and none have been collected yet.
The amnesty began on Monday this week and will go on for three weeks, ending on June 9.
Police Commissioner Matthew Varley made the statement during a weekly police media conference with the local media yesterday.
He said since the commencement of the programme, the progress is going well, but at this point in time there is no report on surrendered firearms yet received.
However, he assures that it is still in the early stage of the amnesty and is not unexpected.
He suggests that if they were to conduct communication strategy, confrontation strategy and engagement strategy with the communities it will be more fruitful.
Adding that the programme is new and will take some time for people to understand the amnesty programme.
Mr Valley said the message is very important and they are looking at getting support from the community as the amnesty goes on.
“But at this point of time no firearms yet surrendered, but that’s not the point of concern for this time.
“I just want people to remember that the amnesty period is only for three weeks until the 9th of June.
“So you have that period to handed in your weapon and surrender them to the police,” he said.
Mr Valley said for anyone with firearms or any sort of gun, they must either handed it to any nearest police station, police post or the team as they will be moving around in the provinces.
He said an official certificate will be issued to the gun holder to document the ammunition that is surrendered.
“We have a robust order trial in place that will track those weapons and count them from the point of surrender to the point of destructions later down the track.
“So people need to work with the police to ensure the amnesty a successful programme,” Mr Valley said
He said there’s no reason people should have guns in the communities.
“We want a peaceful and safe society. And trust should be on the police as they’re are well train and well equip to provide security for the country.
“Thus, up until the time amnesty expire on the 9th June, if you are found in possession of firearms at a later time you’ll be prosecuted,” Mr Varley said.
