New local NGO to target youth unemployment
AN upcoming local Non-government Organization (NGO) has pledged its commitment to providing alternative and deeper insight into combatting unemployment in Honiara.
Dubbed ‘Live Your Dream SI,’ the organization is aimed at targeting school drop outs and unemployed youths of Honiara.
An executive committee was formed and headed by Former Director of Sports, John Bakeua as President, Johnson Teava as Vice President, Lawrina Atkin as Secretary, Luke Memua as Treasurer with Committee members, Susan Funu, Dyell Tengemoana and Junior Marvin Baekisapa.
President, Bakeua in an interview said they will meet this Wednesday at the Taj Mahal Restaurant in Honiara to confirm the establishment of the NGO.
Kick starting the implementation of its programmes, the local NGO has already scheduled a workshop from the 19 to 24 June at Rove Police Club with an expected 60 participants enlisted from West Honiara to attend.
Mr Bakeua said: “We see this group of people have been neglected by the government for so long, and that further delay in satisfying their needs and wants could jeopardise the country’s national development plan.”
He said this workshop aims to provide alternative and deeper insight into what the youths of today can do for themselves rather than the usual anticipation for handouts.
“This NGO compliments the Youth@Work Programme and other similar organisations focusing on providing an alternative venue for the youths to exercise their potentials.
As any NGO, the sustenance of its activities will depend on public and private sector support, according to Bakeua.
He adds topics that will be covered in the workshop includes, ‘Self-esteem, Knowing who you are, Culture and Modernity, Women in Society, Who is writing my future, entrepreneurship and Drug and Alcohol among others.
“We would be honoured if some of the business houses would like to support us, in this regard we would become partners in socio economic development,” he believes.
