Solomon Islands needs good leaders

A former diplomat says the country needs leaders who are critical thinkers, ethical in leadership and entrepreneurship.

Speaking during the Women in Politic Forum last week, Mr Rex Horoi said leaders across all sectors of society must possess these three skill areas in order to transform any society.

He stressed that our institutions have failed to produce leaders with these skills and that improvement is needed.

“The key messages are that while democracy is about Numbers, I am proposing that getting votes to win elections should be balanced with the quality of leaders we are voting into parliament,” Mr Horoi explained.

He said the long term goal is to grow a new crop of leaders with three key skills and attribute to set performance within the decision making bodies.

Mr Rex Horoi is the appointed Advisor of Solomon Islands Alliance for Women in Politics – an organisation established to assist National Council of Women providing advocacy for women wanting to become members of Parliament.

Solomon Islands alliance for women in politics (SIAWIP) is an auspices of the Solomon Islands National Council of Women (NCW) as specified under Section (8), Subsections (8.1) and (8.2), and a body called Solomon Islands Alliance for Women in politics shall be established with the following – Terms of References (TORs) to support the SINCW’s programme on Women in Leadership.

It pursuing the agenda of Solomon Islands’ Women in Politics the Solomon Islands Alliance for Women in Politics will carry-out the following activities towards achieving the overall goal of “Transforming Solomon Islands through inclusive human development”.
