CBT ideal for preserving environment

THE Land Economic Management and Conservation (LEMCO) see Community Based Tourism as a viable solution to some urgent problems in environment preservation in Solomon Islands. It more specifically focuses on reducing the most urgent problems faced by humans today such as global warming, deforestation and land speculation. Although CBT is new to Solomon Islands, it is not something new to other parts in the Pacific, an oldest way of conducting tourism, and it is recommended for Solomons which is rich in natural resources. According to LEMCO, the CBT is fortunateRead More

Recruitment of RSIPF must be controlled

A former police sergeant has called on the Ministry of Police, National Security and Correctional Service to consider controlling police recruitment. Henry B Kahui made the call following the observation that the number of female recruits over the years started has increased. A report of 7000 people without any health services in Isabel province

DEAR EDITOR, for any ‘outsider’ reading that in 2017 in a province of the Solomon Islands when substantial medical aid in terms of funding and medical supplies has been constantly given by countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the Republic of China (ROC), it is incredible and hard to believe that up to 7,000 people have no access to medical services. Even worse to have to believe that communities around Tatamba ward are having to travel 200 miles by canoe to access health service at Poro clinic. TheRead More

Project mismanagement in Ulawa

DEAR EDITOR, we refer to two new articles titled “Contractor Rebuts Allegation of Project Mismanagement” and “Workers Be Patient with Me: Ha’atalo” which appeared in your paper on Thursday January 12, 2017, Issue 2492. I am surprised to read about the constant denial of Mr Badley Ha’ataolo, the contractor who was awarded the contract to construct two buildings for Pirupiru Secondary School in Ulawa Island, stating that he had settled financial dues of 32 construction labourers and that he had not mismanaged project funds belonging to Pirupiru Secondary School. HisRead More

Land, government & RAMSI

MUCH has been said about the Customary Land Tenure System and its hindrance to national development. Studies have been conducted to identify an alternative and workable system that would promote the development aspirations of the country. Sadly enough, there is no political will to pursue this idea beyond the recommendations and reports on which they are written. It seems that the findings are shelved away to gather dust at the cost of the much needed development to the people of Solomon Islands. Successive governments admittedly agreeing to the impediments poisedRead More

CIP citizens complain over incomplete Tulagi mini hospital

DEAR EDITOR, the complaints raised by CIP concerned citizens over the above in the last week issue No 2487. My ultimate response is to put things in perspective in light of the above misconceptions levelled toward the halting of the Tulagi mini hospital construction. First and foremost, the concern citizens of Central Island Province are barking at the wrong tree, whilst their genuine concern should be voiced to the responsible ministry (Ministry of Health) as the employer. Common sense should rule on such issues why the completion of this projectRead More
