Western province to revive Mile-6 provincial farm
Western Provincial Government is working hard to revive the Mile-6 provincial farm located in west Gizo.
The Division caters for breeding programmes and practical training for schools and other people who need service.
Premier Hon Wayne Maepio said the province is trying to invest in agriculture where people can focus on to give a long term return.
“We are looking at improving mile six Provincial farm this year and to assist all our local farmers, but we also rely on national government to give us support because the provincial government is relying on the national government for funds, such as the PCDF to support our projects.
“This is to strengthening and improving existing industries such as cocoa, copra, farming and other agriculture activities.”
He explained that government Division focuses on farmers to give right information and help, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL) down to the farmers because this is the government’s focus this year.
Meanwhile, according to the report from the Western Provincial government’s 3-year development plan 2017/2019 the people in the province lack basic information on how to improve and increase productivity in all their agricultural products.
Another significant challenge for surrounding islands is inaccessibility to transport service to move their products to major markets, as shown with copra farmers in Ranonga, Vella la Vella, Kolombangara and Rendova when they have to transport their copra products to Gizo and Noro.
