Students question government on Goroka outstanding fees
TEN SIG-sponsored students for the University of Goroka (UOG), in PNG, are questioning the Ministry of Education on what is being done with their plight.
The first-year students fear that their future is hanging by a thread and are anxious to know what the government is doing.
Semester one will begin shortly at the institution, and the students would like the government to clarify the status quo of the situation as soon as possible.
Goroka University Council recently took the decision not to register and enroll Solomon Islands students under SIG Scholarship to the university this year until SIG pays its outstanding debts.
University Chancellor, Mr Joseph Sukwianomb, had said that the decision taken meant that those students who are continuing, as well as new intakes for 2017 academic year at UOG, will not be allowed to register.
He said decision also applies to Solomon Islands students who attended UOG in the last two years, from 2015 to 2016, under the SIG sponsorship who did not pay their required fees, but completed their studies and are eligible to graduate.
“These students may graduate, but will not be issued with their certificates, diplomas and degrees,” he said.
Mr Sukwianomb added that he had delivered all the relevant documents to the Solomon Islands High Commission Office in Port Moresby for their consideration and appropriate action.
He also further mentioned that the PNG High Commission Office in Solomon Islands was also notified of UOG’s verdict.
