Rubbish in Honiara
DEAR EDITOR, as a concerned youth and citizen of Solomon Islands specifically Honiara town, I would like to bring to your attention the need for fellow citizens to consider as a significant matter that will affect our environment in the future.
The amount of rubbish being carelessly put away has obviously resulted in creating the sidewalks, drains, seaside areas and other public venues to look untidy and unhygienic to the eyes of everyone including non-citizens.
The attitude and practice of disposing rubbish inappropriately has been a common trend over the years and it has not improved to the extent where further action needs to be taken by the town council and government.
However, it is everyone’s responsibility including the government, NGOs, community leaders and schools to encourage proper disposal of rubbish in the area.
The government should establish education programs throughout the community that addresses sustainable community improvement, litter prevention, beautification of the environment and ways to recycle used goods and items.
It is important for these organisations to consider what actions need to be implemented such as promoting public awareness on the health hazards that littering does to human health and the environment.
People should consider the fact that polluting increases the chances of climate change to affect the earth and destroy it completely.
“Where will we live if the rise of the sea level takes over our home?”
I urge everyone to work together and set an example for family, friends and children by using rubbish or recycling alternatives and not littering.
In order for us to live in a healthy and safe environment we must work together.
