RSIPF rearmed with 3 weapon types
POLICE commissioner Mathew Varley announced yesterday that RSIPF will be rearmed, an initiative which marks an important milestone for the RSIPF.
Mr Varley said that only three types of weapons will be used; semi-automatic pistols, shot-guns and rifles which cater for crocodiles.
Mr Varley is thankful to the Solomon Islands government for showing confidence towards RSIPF by endorsing the rearmament of certain specialists units within RSIPF.
He mentioned that only a limited number of highly trained officers from the Police Response Team (PRT) and Close Personal Protection team (CPP) will have access to the weapons during specific circumstances when on duty.
The commissioner added that RSIPF is in the process of purchasing the approved firearms, ammunition and accoutrements.
The commissioner mentioned that this approach will enable RSIPF to provide protection to the communities, borders and waters of the country whilst an operational requirement is at hand.
Mr Varley stated that the rearming of these limited officers will allow Solomon Islands to carry out the international obligations of providing protection for the Henderson International Airport and dignitaries when RAMSI is no longer operational in the islands.
