POLICE are investigating the cause of injuries on the two remandees who escaped from the Auki Correctional Centre.

Police Commissioner Frank Prendergast said both accused were seriously injured prior to the arrest and police are investigating the cause of the injuries.

Police at this stage do not know whether they injured themselves in escaping from the Correctional Centre or someone else injured them after they escaped.

He said further detailed information on how they escaped will be made later after the investigations completed, but both escapees were evacuated on Thursday from Auki to Honiara.

“I don’t want to comment further as investigation on the case is continuing,” Mr Prendergast said.

Mr Prendergast also dismissed speculation in the media that police officers might have been involved in causing injuries on the two escapees.

He said “that is not the case that speculation is really unhelpful”.

However he acknowledges the community in supporting the police to re-capture the two escapees and also the effort of his police officers in Auki for their prompt response in capturing the accused.
