Oxfam eyes climate change adaptation and disaster risk management

THE Oxfam Solomon Islands is looking at introducing new concept of Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Management to stakeholders and communities in the country.

Country’s International Non Profitable Organisation, Oxfam Solomon Islands is eyeing a new concept facilitated by students from the University of Auckland in New Zealand, describing the idea provides evidence that could influence situation better.

The Senior Programme Manager for Oxfam SI, Mrs Doreen Fernando said communities will benefit from this concept through its network as well as from the participant’s network.

In national level, Mrs Fernando said they have been working closely with the National Disaster Management Office, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock about building climate change adaptation and humanitarian response work.

“We support community to increase their capacity to become more resilience in a disaster situation, and support Government’s structure and system of the government mechanism, NDMO and PDO how they work with communities,” Mrs Fernando said.

Regarding the concept introduce by Auckland University student’s findings, Mrs Fernando said it provides evidence to improve on policy and influence decision makers.

She explained Oxfam Solomon Islands point out the Auckland University students is good at doing research and they have an evidence can be used to improve the policy and actual work in terms of implementation of framework in the country.

The Country Director for Oxfam SI, Ms Abi Akinyemi said they will be looking at how they make sure to share right information of DRM and climate change adaptation.

She said, what Oxfam needs to apprehending in a way meaningful is to make sure they open up a space to share output from discussion in challenges and come up with important strategies for the Solomon Islands.
