No tsunami threat, relief for Gizo residents
NO tsunami threat issued out over the weekend was a relief for Gizo citizens after a shaky earthquake rocked the town bit for a few seconds.
An undersea earthquake of magnitude 6.3 occurred on Saturday around 2pm approximately 14 kilometres northeast of Mono Island, Shortland Western Province.
It was located near latitude 7.2 degrees South and longitude 155.7 degrees east.
Luckily there was no tsunami threat for Solomon Islands as issued by the Solomon Islands Meteorological Service later on around 2:15 pm the same day.
Despite no tsunami threat, the earthquake had created a bit of panic for the Gizo citizens raising many questions if there was a tsunami possibility.
Few concerned citizens speaking to this paper said since the earthquake and tsunami that occurred in April 2nd 2007, there has always been this unstable feeling every time an earthquake occurs.
“Such experience from the past has left us a massive shock and for us to never underestimate the power of nature,” they said.
According to the recent earthquake experience over the weekend, there was no damage reported
