Loophole in Gov’t strategy
Illicit wealth missing from anticorruption strategy, Manele probes PM to explain reason
THE issue of illicit wealth or unexplained wealth is missing in the National Anticorruption Strategy (NACS).
Leader of the Official Opposition and Member of Parliament (MP) for Hograno-Kia-Havulei, Hon Jeremiah made the statement in Parliament this week when contributing to the motion on the Strategy.
“I don’t know whether its exclusion is intentional or not,” Hon Manele said.
He then added that it would be for the best that the Prime Minister Hon Manasseh Sogavare make clear before Parliament the rationale behind its exclusion or whether it was a policy choice to exclude the important matter.
The Opposition Leader then added that the document (NACS) further highlights on pages 18 to 25 how corruption risks will or should be managed by the Public Sector; the Judiciary; Law Enforcement Agencies; the Civil Society; and the Private Sector.
He then told Parliament that one of the cross cutting needs in all these sectors, especially in the Public Sector, the Judiciary, and the Law Enforcement Agencies is the need for capacity building and training to address corruption issues.
As for the Private Sector, Hon Jeremiah Manele said he welcomes the need to strengthen integrity and introduce legislations that require strict anticorruption compliance.
