THE 2017 High School Hockey league is set to kick off at the first week of April.

A total of 25 secondary schools in Honiara and Guadalcanal have confirmed participation to fight for this year’s total price of $20,000 plus 60 medals.

This is according to Solomon Islands Hockey Federation (SIHF) President, Nihal Seneviratne.

Mr Seneviratne thanked Major Sponsor Low Price Enterprise for its second time in sponsoring the league.

This year’s Cup names are Sunny Calrose Rice for men and FMF Biscuits Fiji for females.

“This league is part of the stepping stone in the revival of the game here after the country’s successful debut at the pacific game in PNG 2015, and the Upcoming Intercontinental cup to be held Sydney Australia and youth Olympic Qualifier in PNG Early next year,” said Mr Seneviratne.

He said fixtures and tournament regulations will be ready before the league starts.

“On behalf of Solomon Islands Hockey Federation and executives we thank the sponsorship by Mr Henry Quan of Low Price Enterprise and his family. It is a big boost to Hockey in Solomon Islands,” Seneviratne adds.

He said hockey has made a big achievement last year and a history for Solomon Islands when it won an international award.

Major Sponsor, Hendry Quan of Low Price Enterprise said as business it is good to give back to the community through sports.

He said he was satisfied on how organisers organised the league last year and thus sponsor it for the second time this year.

Mr Quan said Low Price is also sponsoring other sports event this year such as Rugby and Basketball.

SIHF President Mr Seneviratne however, said other hockey projects in 2017 include the Kids Hockey Development programme which is currently underway for primary schools in and around Honiara.
