A taskforce is on track to give awareness in the Honiara Central Market concerning proper use of the green and yellow wheelie bins.

The Honiara City Council through its Market Division and the Honiara Central Market Venders Association will conduct public awareness in the Central Market on segregation of green and solid waste.

The awareness programme will start at the market and later spill over to the schools.

The taskforce are HCC Market Division, Environment and Health Division, Law Enforcement and Honiara Central Market Venders Association.

The Market Master, Mr Jimmy Hanson Riunga said since they have limited resource the taskforce will start slowly by using hailers and demonstration activities while waiting for PA system.

“We will continue to perform awareness through our network, currently we use hailer, members of market vender together with HCC Law enforcement are tasked to execute awareness.

“This is to make sure what is HCC’s expectation with the use of bins and how to keep the Honiara Central Market clean and safe environment.”

Apart from the awareness strategy, the HCC Chief Health Promotion Officer, Mr Oliver Oli said they have already conducted two trainings for market venders, market cleaners and Law Enforcement on the market ordinance.

“It is an ongoing activity, it’s not a thing that will stop from there, we’ll keep on working because as human being changes will not happen overnight its ongoing process maybe next generation will,” Mr Oli said.

In addition, HCC’s collection of trash each day from Central Market and Residence around Honiara City is high to a maximum of 8 cubic metres, and that excludes the commercial houses.
