Concern over small wharfs for big ships
THERE are concerns by ship owners and passengers on few wharfs along the Marovo, Roviana and Vona vona lagoons of Western Province.
Due to bigger passenger ships serving Western province, concerns have it that the wharfs are too small, short in length and are very low giving difficulty for ships to berth.
One concerned ship crew said that leaders of the province should look into the matter by upgrading such wharfs because passenger ships now are bigger in size.
In some areas big passenger ships have to drop anchor outside because the wharf is too small, thus creating inconvenience for travellers, who have to move between ship and shore using OBMs.
Premier for Western Province Hon Wayne Maepio says he does not know who to blame on the wharf designs but supports that such wharfs are truly designed in a way that are not conducive.
“That concern has been noted by my government and we have shared it with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Development (MID) in which they said to me that they have plans to put letter ‘T’ wharfs at areas such as at Seghe Station,” said the Premier.
“But when actually the assessment and all these will take place is still yet to be known,” he said.
According to the Premier, wharfs along the lagoons were built by MID in which the province has nothing to say on that part as it all depends on MID’s programme.
