Boat accident claims life

A mother of three was killed after two boats collided outside the Kukudu Adventist School on Kolombangara Island in the Western Province.

Police and locals are still searching for a 16 year old boy who also went missing following the incident.

The collision occurred around 8:00 pm on Friday evening.

According to Gizo Police Operations yesterday, another three passengers also received medical treatment at Gizo Hospital.

It was reported that more than five passengers were on board the two OBM’s involved in the collision.

Gizo Police Operations said they were both 23 feet ray boats.

One OBM had a 60 horse power engine, while the other a 40 horse-power engine attached to it.

The 40 horse powered OBM was traveling back to Kolombangara from Gizo when it collided onto the 60 horse powered OBM that was traveling from Ropa village on its way to Kukudu Adventist College.

Sources said the two boats had their signal lights turned on when they were travelling, however, due to the reflections from the bright lights on Kukudu the two drivers of the boat were distracted causing the accident.

The passengers of the two OBM’s were rushed to the Kukudu Clinic after the accident where they were quickly referred to Gizo Hospital the same evening.

“It is confirmed that the woman died instantly,” Gizo Police Operation Officers said yesterday.

“The incident that occurred over the weekend is very serious as it is the first kind of boat accident to have occurred in the province,” they said.

Gizo Police Operations are urging traveling boats within the area to help locals and police search for the16 year old boy currently still missing at sea.

“If anyone sees anything then quickly report it to the police or contact Gizo Police Post on 60999.
