Betel-nut control ordinance is coming soon

THE Honiara City Council will soon introduce the Betel Nut Control Ordinance for Honiara City.
The ordinance has already been drafted and is awaiting gazetting before becoming an Act.
Head of HCC Law Enforcement Team, Robert Madeo recently told this paper that very soon HCC will carry-out awareness around the city on the ordinance.
He said the purpose of the awareness is to let people or Honiara dwellers be aware of the new betel-nut ordinance.
Mr Mateo pointed out that with the enactment of this ordinance, it will look at some of the issues betel nut vendors and the public face in the city.
“This is for that fact that HCC cannot rule out betel nut from Honiara, and with that we are coming up with this ordinance to help solve some of the issues face.
“Because we know even how small or big the vendors can earn out of selling betel nut, it helps to address some of their needs.
“Not only the economical side of betel nut we looked at in the ordinance, but it covers all aspects of what we experienced with betel-nut in Honiara.
“I won’t dwell on what the ordinance will like, but the outset is all about creating Proper Avenue to pursue the business and cleanliness of the city as well as the health status of the public.” he said.
However, Mr Madeo pointed out that HCC is looking forward to working with the general public in Honiara for the implementation of the ordinance.
