Advancing info-gathering for investigation proposed

CHAIRMAN of the Leadership Code Commission (LCC) Solomon Kalu said it would be complimentary if the Ombudsman Bill 2016 were to also add in its provision to have digital information as evidence permissible.

Mr Kalu made the statement based on his subjective view on how information and evidence should be gathered by the Ombudsman’s office.

The query was raised by Member of Parliament (MP) for Small Malaita Hon Rick Hou in the Bills and Legislation Committee (BLC) inquiry into the Ombudsman Bill 2016 yesterday.

According to Hon Hou, he also raised the question in the BLC’s inquiry on the proposed legislation with the Ombudsman’s office previously.

In response, the Chairman of the LCC Solomon Kalu said should situations not allow time produce information in handwriting, the proposed legislation should also state this as part of its provisions to cater for means to obtain information and evidence.

This added, is to keep up with technological advancement and legitimate ways information can be obtained.

The Ombudsman’s office said this was noted and the Chairman of the BLC and MP for North-West Choiseul, Hon Connelly Sandakabatu added that the Committee would add it to the Committee’s recommendations of the report that will be presented to Parliament.
