World Environment Day today
THE Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology will mark the World Environment Day today.
Activities planned to mark the day involve beach clean-up at Yacht Club, Mbokona stream and a canoe race from Yacht Club to Coconut Café and back.
According to MECDM, the theme of 2017 World Environment Day is “Connecting People to Nature – in the city and on the land, from the poles to the equator”.
The theme implores everyone to get outdoors and into nature, to appreciate its beauty and its importance, and to take forward the call to protect the Earth that everyone share.
“This year’s theme invites you to think about how we are part of nature and how intimately we depend on it.
“It challenges us to find fun and exciting ways to experience and cherish this vital relationship,” a statement from MECDM says.
Since 2008, MECDM has led a number of public events in celebrating key global and regional events.
These events were used to promote environmental themes and to get public participation in activities organised.
Commemorated each year on June 5, the WED is the United Nation’s principal vehicle for encouraging global awareness and action for the environment.
People and stakeholders from more than 100 countries collectively celebrate this day, putting a face to many of the environmental challenges and advocating for positive actions for the environment.
