INSTITUTE of Tourism and Hospitality in Solomon Islands National University (SINU) is planning to offer diploma programmes starting next year.

In an exclusive interview with SINU’s Director for Institute of Tourism and Hospitality, Mr Charlie Panakere, he said the areas that will be offered diplomas are Food and Beverage, Housekeeping and Accommodation Management and Event Management.

Amongst many courses to be offered next year, Mr Panakere said Event Management is a new programme which they believe to be significant as Solomon Islands is heading towards many events especially 2023 South Pacific Games.

He said the country needs to produce more human resources particularly in this field.

Director Panakere said the University will offer degree programmes but they need to firstly train men and women to be active citizens in all areas of tourism and hospitality.

Currently the Institute is under construction.

Director Panakere said, “As you see lot of constructing is going on, we’ll be converting this place into what they called Boutique Hotel to train students with skills that can get them to employability.

“Another area I am looking as Director is self employment, we want to train students more on entrepreneurship when left school they can start their own employment opportunities.”
