Strong urban linkage can boost nation development

IF cities are to drive national development for the country, then the country needs strong urban-provincial linkages.

This is one of the important messages highlighted in the Honiara Urban Growth Report, which was compiled by students from the Australian National University.

Key linkage the report are translated to infrastructure development, access to services and affordable political will to drive the needed development forward.

One of the Researchers Mr Joseph Foukona said linkages between urban centres and national development aspiration are miles apart as there is no proper investment on infrastructure development.

He said diversifying urban development to other urban centres will set a strong foundation to drive national developments.

Mr Foukona said investment in roads, affordable public transport, and good communications can allow people living in the provinces to take advantage of urban business opportunities provided in Honiara.

“If cities are to drive national development for all of us, then we need strong urban-provincial linkages,” he said.

Mr Foukona said way forward is to carefully craft motivations for businesses and partnerships with development partners making sure difference to linkages are well planned and implemented.

He said programme and policies have been put in place but implementation and enforcing of programmes and policies is very important.

Mr Foukona emphasis that this requires appropriate resourcing of authorities, accountability for funds allocated, and clear responsibilities.

“Most importantly, it also requires the support of those affected by the plans and regulations and laws, so we need to engage people, build support for urban plans and policies, and make sure action happens,” he said.

Mr Foukona said the new Honiara Urban Growth report provides a way forward for responsible authorities to consider and act upon for the benefit of the Honiara residence and future urban development.
