THREE people have escaped a near-fatal crash when a Toyota Hilux they were travelling in veered off the road and plunged into the SMI fence at Town Ground, at around 4pm yesterday.

The Toyota Hilux with the registered number MA 4510 involved in the crash is believed to be owned by the Solomon Islands Ports Authority (SIPA).

Had it not

Witnesses say if it had not been for the fence, the vehicle would have hit the concrete power pole which was few inches away from the front of the damaged Hilux.

Island Sun was at the scene moments after the accident and witnessed smell of alcohol emanating from the cabin with two bottles of homebrewed kwaso found in the front cabin.

A security officer manning the old SMI area relayed that they saw the vehicle, which was travelling westward from Rove zigzag on high speed from Coral Sea heading towards the city.

“Maybe the driver must have been sleepy and went fall asleep at the wheel which unfortunately ended that way.

The three people, a driver and two passengers were nowhere to be found as they jetted off, abandoning the vehicle to the dismay of dozens who turned up to witness the accident.

The accident yesterday is the third in a series of accidents that happened during the long Easter break.

Island Sun understands police are currently investigating the matter.
