Sikua calls for tabling of Anti-corruption Bill

MEMBER of Parliament for East Guadalcanal has called on the government to table the Anti-corruption bill when Parliament resumes its next sitting.

Honourable Dr Derek Sikua said the Anti-Corruption Bill is important as it will be a model to eliminate corruption and transform the country.

He said corruption practices are not only happening in government ministries but also in other legal entities.

Hon Sikua said some entities established as community-based charitable organisations are making money out of activities they carry out.

This, he said, indicates that corruption is invading both public and private sectors.

“I want to give an example, a group from Australia donated two 40 foot containers towards a school in one of the constituencies.

“The consigner of the containers is Rotary Solomon Islands.

“What alarmed me is the charges for the safe keeping of the containers. I found that the charges exceeding the original price,” Hon Sikua said.

He urges Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare to push for the Anti-corruption Bill to be tabled in the next parliament meeting.
