Only finance slows the idea for a Gizo CHS library

WESTERN Provincial Minister for Education Hon John Hopa supports the idea for Gizo Community High School to have a school library and said it has been under discussions.

The only reason to slow this development for the school according to the Minister is finance to support the plans.

“Gizo CHS is an education resource centre and it is a big school located in the heart of the Provincial Capital so it should indeed have a school library,” confirmed the Minister.

“Most of our schools engage through the internet nowadays to do research or so but it is important for a school to have a library as well.

“I partly blame that focusing more through the internet also destroys the strong desires to build school libraries,” he said.

“But I see that there is a need for a library to be built as it will be a place for source of knowledge as well,” added the Minister.

When approaching the Gizo CHS School Principal recently over this matter, she said only a temporary one with a few rotary books to cater for their Form Six students is being set up.

“The purpose for the temporary library is to meet the education criteria under NESU but a school offering Form Six studies should also have a proper library,” said the School Principal.

“All the current books we have set up in the temporary library are out of date books in which they are only rotary books. Not all students access these books as well,” she said.

According to the School Principal, the rotary books currently used in the school’s temporary library are books that have been donated to the school four to five years ago.

Since then, there has been no new books donated to the school and it is past three years now since Gizo CHS has introduced its Form Six class.

“There is a big plan for both the primary and secondary level of the school to have a library but when that plan should be put in action is still yet to be known,” said the School Principal.

“I believe it should be made known once the Education Authority of the province finalises the plan,” she said.

Students of Gizo CHS also sharing their concern urges the School Board and Provincial Education Authority to consider this matter seriously in order to improve the facilities needed for the school to help boost student’s studies.

Gizo CHS currently reaches Form Six level in Secondary.
