SENIOR Officials from the Governments of Nauru and Solomon Islands have visited the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) to discuss the possibility of sending students of Nauru here for education.

The discussions were held on May 5 and officials include the Secretary of Land Management in Nauru, Wess Tamakan, Senior Desk Officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Ellison Mason and Acting Vice Chancellor of SINU Basil Marasinghe along with other staff.

In the past, the Government of Nauru had send students to other universities in the region, now it is considering sending students to the Solomon Islands National University.

The Secretary of Land Management in Nauru Mr Wess Tamakan said this approach is consistent with the bilateral agreement signed between the Governments of Solomon Islands and Nauru.

He also said Nauru would consider all programmes that are available in SINU however, among the priority areas are Surveying, Trade Courses and Nursing.

“Nauru is pleased with the rapid progress SINU has been making during the last couple of years, particularly in academic programmes and infra-structure,” Mr Tamakan said.

Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Basil Shelton Marasinghe said the interest by Nauru is another example that SINU has been gaining international recognition.
