Man denies rape charge
A man alleged of raping a girl at a settlement in Reef Islands, Temotu province, pleaded not guilty to three counts of rape yesterday.
The accused is faced with three counts of rape, one count of intimidation and one count of simple larceny.
He pleaded not guilty to all the charges and a short form preliminary inquiry was conducted on the case.
Principal Magistrate Ricky Iomea, after assessing all the documents presented to the court, found that there is enough evidence for the case to be committed to the High Court for trial.
Since the charges committed happened on two different occasions, the Court separates the files; the one on simple larceny charge will be heard in the Magistrate Court while the others are committed to the High Court for trial.
Magistrate Iomea said since the three rape charges with the intimidation charge happened on the same victim, that file is to be committed to the High Court.
The simple larceny charge will go for pre-trial conference on February 27 at the Honiara Magistrate Court and the prosecution and defence lawyers are given a week to prepare PTC documents.
The accused was charged in relation to an incident which occurred in Temotu province and in Henderson, February and May last year.
Serah Karani of the Office of the Public Solicitor represents the accused.
