Infrastructure not an issue to tourism in Solomon Islands

INFRASTRUCTURE is not really a big issue to the tourism sector in the country.

This is what Mr Len Cordiner said when asked on the issue of infrastructure in the country, where it obviously set a drawback for many tourism operators in the country.

Mr Cordiner answered during the Digital Tourism workshop held in Honiara recently, saying infrastructure can be neither an obstacle or may not be depending on the type of travellers.

He said country like Solomon Islands is an ideal destination for adventure travellers.

“And usually these traveller’s interests are on discovering the natural settings of the country where it is not really matter them to travel on roads or sea transport most of the time.,

“Yes, they can be, but every necessary transport they might need is already here, so what more?” Mr Cordiner said.

He pointed out that the only biggest problem here is most tourism operations happened in the provinces, and network accessibility is something that needs to work on.

Adding that this should be the area of greatest concern for operators to work on to market their products and become marketable.

Mr Cordiner pointed out that one tourism operators need to know is mast tourists don’t come to Solomon Islands and stay here in Honiara.

He said most of the things tourists look for are out there in the provinces.

“Most tourists they came here to visit the outer islands in the Solomon Islands. So I think the type of travellers is what really matter to understand.

“I think Solomon Islands has such interesting natural resources and community tourism where it really targeted the adventure traveller where they are looking for.

“They are looking for real experience and only out there in the remote parts of this country it can find,” Mr Cordiner.

He stressed that with the early development of tourism it has nothing to do much with well establish infrastructure before the industry can operate.

Mr Cordiner emphasised that the very important thing is to identify what the country is good and to focus on that.

“I don’t worry too much about infrastructure where it will eventually follow.

“Because adventure travellers don’t worry much about this as they understand what they do or can do,” he said.
