Former Sri Lankan SIG law secretary dies

JOHN Paul, a former Secretary of Solomon Islands Law Revision Commission, who was actively involved in the preparation of the revised law of Solomon Islands from 1990 to 1996, passed away in his home in Canada this week.

Late Paul of Sri Lankan origin was 90 years old.

Late Paul spent six years working in the Attorney General’s Chamber as secretary of the Revised Laws of Solomon Islands prepared under the authority of the revised edition of the Laws Act, 1995.

The revised edition of the laws was published in 1996.

Late Paul was one of the active members of the Revised Edition of the Laws Commission appointed under the said Act.

He worked under the auspices of the Government of Solomon Islands with Ranjit Hewagama as the Legal Draftsman and Chairman, Primo Afeau the Attorney-General, John Hauirae the Principal Assistant Legal Draftsman, John Tebolo – Assistant Legal Draftsman and late Sir Mariano Kelesi as the Assistant Secretary.

Prior to coming to Solomon Islands, John worked in the Legal draftsman Department in Sri Lanka for over 30 years and thereafter as secretary to the law revision commission in the attorney general’s chamber of British Virgin Islands.

Solomon Islands’ Sri Lanka Community are mourning the passing away of late Paul.

Sri Lankan, Nihal Seneviratne, President of Solomon Islands Hockey and Archery and businessman, said it’s sad to hear a great Sri Lankan who helped to revise Solomon Islands’ law and during his stay in the country helped many locals has passed on.

Sri Lankans are employed in the Ministry of Finance, Solomon Islands National University (SINU), Heritage Park Hotel, Solomon Islands Ports Authority (SIPA), POB Bank, Oxfam and on road development.
