John Alasina, chairman of Faumamanu community

VILLAGERS from Faumamanu and surrounding areas raised their basic community needs during the one-day forum last Friday at Faumamanu, in East malaita.

Speaking on behalf of the communities, John Alasina said Faumamanu community faces lots of challenges, especially with proper sanitation, water supply and the need of a new community hall.

“For the last few years we have struggled to have a water supply project for Faumamanu where we have applied for but no latest up dates from the donor.

“We have a big number of population but we don’t have any proper water supply to all of us.

“Sanitation is another important issue that we also need proper sanitation for our community.

“It is for our health especially for our children, men and women.

“According to our records in our medical clinic most babies and young children were affected with diarrhoea, red eye and other disease that we believe we were affected from those things especially proper water supply for drinking and sanitation.”

Alasina urges the provincial and the national government, NGOs and other stakeholders to address their issues.

“This is our cry from the people of these communities in around Faumamanu, Alasina revealed.

In responding to the issues raised by the community, Rural Development Programme officer (RDP) Moses Rouhana said RDP is willing to help in assisting their water supply project.

“We will consult you soon depend on our engineer to do proper engineering side before ground proceeds.

“We will be working closely with the RWSS for this project.”
