Anticorruption strategy outlined
PRIME Minister Hon Manasseh Sogavare has outlined the national anticorruption strategy priority areas.
He outlined this on the floor of Parliament on Monday when moving the motion on the national anticorruption strategy for deliberation before the Committee of the Whole House.
According to Sogavare, his Government is focused to deliver six priority achievements in the national anticorruption strategy.
They are to; strengthen laws against corruption, harmonise anticorruption efforts across the public sector, fighting corruption in the forestry and mining sector, strengthening procurement and public financial management procedures, improve salaries and conditions of service for public servants and to eliminate political pressure on public servants and political leaders.
The national anticorruption strategy is what is first brought before Parliament to be deliberated and mutually agreed to before all the anticorruption Bills be tabled in Parliament.
It is understood that the Government’s initial intention was to bring the anticorruption Bills to Parliament first.
“It would be like we are putting the cart before the horse if we were to do so,” said the Prime Minister.
Therefore, it was agreed that the strategy must first be brought before Parliament to have the Members of Parliament to thoroughly go through and discuss over until a mutual consensus is reached.
Only then will the anticorruption Bills be brought to Parliament.
